Interestingly, the Gospel reading for today (in the Catholic Church) is nearly the exact same one as on June 29 of this year. The only difference is the addition of verse 20. Why would the Catholic Church want to re-present essentiall the same reading, twice? Presumably, to focus on both of its two important aspects. In my previous homily, I touched on both the christening of Simon into “Peter” and the many perceptions of Jesus. The Catholic Church presumably focuses on the first of these points on June 29 and the second today. Since I have already discussed both of them on June 19, I will focus on the extra verse. (more…)

Gender is not a subject that is often linked to religion any more, but it is still a relevant consideration in modern times. I’ve already said that I don’t believe that God is actually a male. Yet, today, the Roman Catholic Church still refuses to allow women to become priests. Why? (more…)
